    Position Summary


    As a member of the Cement Division Technical Services team, the PEM reports to the Director of Technical Services and leads the Cement Division management team in the identification of, analysis of and recommendations for operations process improvements in quarrying, pre-blending, raw milling, kiln feed/blending/dosing, pyro-process and clinker cooling, clinker handling, finish mill feed and processing, cement handling and distribution processes in support of optimum cement plant operations. This includes evaluations and studies of processes, alternative raw materials and fuels, using well established process engineering techniques related to cement plant operations. The PEM will train process engineers and process supervisors in fundamental analytical techniques as an ongoing activity to promote the technical capabilities / knowledge of our process staff within the plants. Will partner with the Corporate and Cement Division management team and staff, and the plants cement operations teams to effectively manage the conceptualization and implementation of solutions aimed at improving the sustainability and performance of the cement operations processes, equipment and personnel. This includes but is not limited to capital evaluations, engineering evaluations, project management assignments and permitting development/support to implement value added action plans in the Cement Division plants.



    • The PEM evaluates training needs of process engineers, process supervisors, control room operators, shift supervisors, and other personnel at the direction of the Director of Technical Services in cooperation with Plant Management.
    • Provides expertise and technical knowledge to cement division and cement plant personnel in the area of cement process, optimization and uniformity techniques. Able to advise on optimal use of refractory and wear protection techniques in the cement manufacturing process.

    • Conducts pre and post startup training and tests for knowledge, leads effort for operational standardization on aspects of raw mill, coal mill, kiln and finish mill operations through checklists, control system parameter development, theory of operation understanding and translation into operating control systems that improve performance and reliability while increasing operations personnel knowledge.

    • Works closely and as assigned by the Director of Technical Services with the operations team to promote continuous improvement in operations, energy consumption, unit production rates, safety, quality and environmental compliance.

    • Keeps abreast of industry technological innovations and upgrades, determining applicability in the Cement Division operations and distribution points.

    • Trains plant process engineers and supervisors in conducting critical process audits directly in the field, teaching how to analyze and interpret data, and how to prioritize recommendations for improvement.

    • Establishes key metrics for plant process engineers and supervisors to monitor the production process to ensure that production and quality control standards are maintained. Teaches corrective action techniques when deficiencies are noted and how to communicate recommended actions to operations teams at both cement plants.

    • Supports and assists the engineering group by preparing and reporting of detailed engineering analyses of specific process opportunities.

    • Designs and validates process, quality control, and operability strategies and identifies opportunities for effective cement plant operations.

    • Validates specifications and participates in the selection of process equipment and suppliers, to arrive at effective solutions for the optimization of production, operational efficiency and equipment reliability in all process related capital projects or studies.

    • Establishes standards in the development and monitoring of procedures and programs to increase process efficiency, equipment performance, product quality, and working conditions.

    • Develops and maintains technical information and standards database for mathematical procedures (thermodynamics, fluid flows, etc.) to analyze existing or new cement manufacturing processes standards. Trains plant process engineers and supervisors to utilize these standards.

    • Participates and leads investigation of technical solutions and exploits latest proven technologies in the cement manufacturing industry to achieve high equipment reliability and efficiencies to enhance overall project results in existing and new plant systems.

    • Provides technical leadership and support to plant process engineers during the start-up of new installations, and in troubleshooting complex process related problems.

    • Trains plant process engineers in writing clear and well-organized reports with explicit recommendations.

    • Key contributor to the ongoing development of the Cement Division management and supervisory team. Coordinates continuous cross-training and professional development activities for all exempt technical /operations supervisory employees.

    • Effectively coordinates efforts between production, maintenance, sales, and marketing to ensure customer expectations are met.

    • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Technical Services

    Minimum Education and Experience

    • Associate or Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering. Master degrees in science and business administration seen as a plus. 
    • Minimum 15 years cement manufacturing plant experience required with Mandatory experience in multiple cement plants, and at the corporate technical level and preferably multiple companies.

    • Extraordinary cement process experience and an encyclopedic / thorough technical knowledge of cement manufacturing processes.

    • Experience and usable knowledge of CFD and process engineering software and tools.

    • Minimum 10 years field / front line supervisory experience.

    • Plant commissioning experience required (>$10 million projects).

    • Demonstration of proficiency and knowledge of kiln/preheater/pre-calciner, raw mill and finish mill operations.

    • Process Audit experience, documenting and following up findings and recommendations, and fulfilling all reporting requirements.

    • Sound experience in Process Design and development of SOP’s for process control of pyro, grinding and quality systems.

    • Demonstration of a superior ability to develop training programs, teaching and testing for knowledge.

    • Firsthand experience developing and delivering training programs to a wide audience.

    • An unquestionable and demonstrated commitment to safety and knowledge of safety practices without exception, being seen as a leader in safety all activities undertaken.
    • Strong written skills are a must as are presentation skills, to mixed groups ranging from hourly employees to senior management. Preferably published as a demonstration of written skill (training, technical documents, etc.)

    • Superb verbal communication skills.

    • Clear concise verbal communication in English with executives, co-workers, employees, customers other departments, vendors, individually and in a group setting.

    • Entirely at ease with public speaking

    • Examples required demonstrating this skill

    • Self-starter.

    • Strong computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including MS Project.

    • Possess excellent interpersonal skills in order to facilitate positive working relationships with all levels of management and staff.

    • A demonstrated ability to respond decisively and expediently to issues as they present themselves and to exercise sound judgment in problem solving. Strong analytical and problem solving skills for process systems.

     Physical Requirements

    • Ability and willingness to travel frequently with multiple plant and terminal responsibilities. Requires overnight travel at times.
    • Ability to drive an automobile up to 5 hours per day and travel by other means.
    • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard-hat, steel toed boots, safety eye wear, safety harnesses and hearing protection.
    • Ability to walk hundreds of yards over rough, uneven, and/or wet, and slippery terrain.
    • Ability to climb on equipment, up and down ladders.
    • Manual dexterity and visual ability to operate a personal computer and various related testing instruments associated with audits.
    • Climb in an out of small spaces , kilns, ball mills, raw mills, dust collectors,
    • Ability to climb ladders and steps up to approximately 50 feet high.
    • Able to work at heights up to approximately 350 feet on platforms and cat walks.
    • Stoop, bend, and squat in order to perform inspection functions and utilize files.
    • Exposure to noise levels requiring use of PPE as a normal course of work conducted.
