We are seeking a Director of Explosives Engineering to oversee and manage our explosives engineering team and support our growing business within the aggregates and raw materials industry. Reporting in to the Vice President of Logistics and Optimization, this position will be responsible for managing and enforcing the safe and cost effective use of explosives and related up-to-date technology across the organization.




  • Provides world class leadership in the areas of safety, sustainability, optimization, and drilling
  • Manages and oversees the organization’s explosives, drilling, and seismic initiatives (to include Safety & Sustainability, Optimization, Performance & Metrics, and Drilling)
  • Proactively manages plant productivity through optimized explosives application
  • Manages competitive bidding for explosive commodities and related services, distribution of business to various suppliers and the ordering process
  • Communicates and works effectively with all levels of Martin Marietta, supplier management, and community stakeholders
  • Interfaces effectively with governmental regulators and neighbors
  • Works as a valued partner with Martin Marietta’s operations, staff, and explosives/drilling/seismic suppliers
  • Serves as primary contact with the ATF and works with individuals in operating units to maintain accurate documentation and permits
  • Evaluates and implements leading edge explosives technologies and methods
  • Provides leadership for explosive engineering training for Martin Marietta employees and suppliers
  • Troubleshoots pit production issues and makes recommendations that lead to optimal output and reduced costs
  • Provides internal training and support to ensure all activities within the team are performed in accordance with the Company’s Mission, Vision, and Values, and in compliance with the Company’s policies, procedures, and Code of Ethical Business Conduct

 Qualifications and skills:


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent experience required and a minimum of 10 years in positions associated with explosives
  • Strong personal commitment to safety
  • Knowledge of underground and surface mine operations and their drilling and blasting requirements; blast design knowledge
  • Ability to coordinate benefits of drill optimization and product selection
  • Able to evaluate local explosives decisions and make recommendations
  • Explosives product manufacturing and specifications knowledge
  • Working knowledge and understanding of MSHA regulations
  • Establish and maintain Responsible Person (RP) status with the ATF
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Willing to accept flexible hours and constant changing schedules; travel requirements vary, but anticipate 30-50%
